2019 Canterbury Summer Theatre Season

Join us for 51st anniversary season of productions---a summer of comedy, love, music, drama and thrills---performed at the intimate Canterbury Theatre in the vibrant Uptown Arts District in Michigan City!

By Nick Payne
June 12-15, 2019
A love story that bends time and space. This spellbinding, romantic journey, which delighted both critics and audiences in New York and London, begins at a backyard barbecue, with a simple encounter between Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a theoretical physicist, who believes that every decision we make, and have never made, exists in an unimaginably vast multitude of parallel universes. But what happens next defies the boundaries of the world we think we know—delving into the infinite possibilities of their relationship, and raising questions about the difference between choice and destiny! “Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible—and so emotionally devastating?

Nick Payne’s gorgeous drama…may be the most sophisticated date play Broadway has seen.” The New York Times

The Queen Bees
By Rob Urbinati
June 19-29, 2019

Connie, Diane, and Brenda are determined to rise above their rough-and-tumble Queens, NY, neighborhood by topping the pop music charts with their girl group, the Queen Bees. They soon realize that their meteoric rise comes with a price, as relationships strain and their rebellious music falls quickly out of fashion. Featuring hit songs from the 60s such as “Leader of the Pack,” “My Boyfriend’s Back,” and “The Boy From New York City,” The Queen Bees revs up audiences with its high-octane musical score!

Based on one of the longest running Off-Broadway plays in history, Vanities: The Musical chronicles the life-affirming journey of three vivacious Texas teens, from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to housewives to liberated women and beyond. This musical captures a snapshot-sharp portrait of the lives, loves, disappointments, and dreams of these young women growing up during the turbulent sixties and seventies and reconnecting in the late 1980s. A funny and poignant look at three best friends who discover that through rapidly changing times, the one thing they can rely on is each other!

A truly original musical that honors brothers and sisters, as well as parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, John & Jen is a gem of a show, brimming with intelligence, wit and beautiful melodies by Andrew Lippa, the award-winning composer of the Broadway hit, The Addams Family, as well as Big Fish, The Wild Party and many more!

Hold Me!
By Jules Feiffer
August 1-3, 2019  (No Wed show)

From the mind of the legendary Jules Feiffer, who for decades was considered the most widely-read social satirist in America, comes this delightful, laugh-filled revue of sketches and vignettes that inhabit the stage with the engaging and all-too-human characters made famous in his popular comic strips. The theme is the plight of today's city dweller, and the hang-ups, personality difficulties, identity crises and assorted mishaps which beset those trapped in what may begin as urban confusion but all too often ends as urban anguish. Hold Me! abounds in warmth and humor, and in the sad/funny truths that, in the final essence, are the very stuff of life!
