2018 Canterbury Summer Theatre Season

Join us for 50th anniversary season of productions--a summer of comedy, love, music, drama and thrills--performed at the intimate Canterbury Theatre in the vibrant Uptown Arts District in Michigan City!

By Ellen Fairey
June 13-16

With jets roaring overhead during Chicago’s annual Air and Water Show, a brother and sister reunite in Graceland, the city’s oldest cemetery, on the occasion of their father’s puzzling death. When the pair decides to look for answers at his favorite tavern, their weekend becomes complicated by bad choices and startling revelations, with hilarious and heartbreaking consequences, illuminating the siblings’ search for connection, happiness, and closure. Winner of the Jeff Award for Best New Play, Graceland was hailed by Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune as a “… beautifully crafted piece of theatre. It touched me greatly. I think it would do the same for you.”

The Bikinis
By Ray Roderick and James Hindman
Musical arrangements by Joe Baker
Additional music and lyrics by Joe Baker and Ray Roderick

June 20-30

It’s the new millennium, and the girl group that everyone loves is bringing back the sun, fun, and all the great songs they sang down on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore… all to raise money for the good folks at Sandy Shores RV Resort. In front of a live audience, The Bikinis relive their heyday and beyond, beginning in the summer of ’64, when the group got their name winning the Belmar Beach Talent Contest in their bikinis! Featuring hits like “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “These Boots Were Made For Walkin’,” “It’s Raining Men,” and many more, The Bikinis is a nonstop musical celebration that promises to get audiences dancing in the aisles!

End of The Rainbow
By Peter Quilter
July 5-14 (No performance on Wednesday, July 4)

The award-winning musical drama, End of The Rainbow, focuses on Judy Garland's "comeback" concerts during Christmas, 1968, both onstage and off. With a six-week booking at London's famed Talk of the Town nightclub, it looks like Garland is set firmly to make a triumphant return to the spotlight. The failed marriages, the suicide attempts and the addictions are all behind her. At forty-six and with new flame, Mickey Deans, at her side, she seems determined to carry it off and recapture her magic. Featuring performances of many of Garland’s greatest hits!

Tick, Tick…Boom!
Book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson
July 18-28

Before Rent, there was Tick, Tick...Boom!. This autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning creator of the Broadway phenomenon, Rent, is the story of Jon, a composer, and the sacrifices that he makes to achieve his big break in theatre. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue and, yet, Jon is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical. Set in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery is presented as a rock musical filled with instantly appealing melodies and a unique blend of musical theatre styles!

A Texas Romance
By Ellsworth Schave
August 2-4 (No Wednesday performance)

Daisy Wilson lives in a small Texas town, a widow since her philandering husband was shot by his mistress—an action with which she has some sympathy. It’s 1928, and romance reenters Daisy’s life when she finds Garland Steinholden in the front yard awaiting permission to call on her, despite her older sister’s chagrin. What follows is the inquisition, the courtship, the pecan pie, and the big, loud rocks crashing down on a small wooden table. Daisy must balance her anger and fear with her need for intimacy and her determination to have a second chance. While Daisy decides if Garland is a worthy cause —politely, but relentlessly, he pursues her---the food chain and the big wheel of life will all play a part!
